Alumnus of the Month: Frédéric Bedin, Chairman of the Board, HOPSCOTCH group

Once a month, we showcase a member of Dauphine Alumni. This month we are proud to present Frédéric Bedin.

Frédéric Bedin is co-founder and Chairman of the Board of HOPSCOTCH, alongside Benoît Désveaux and Pierre-Franck Moley. Hopscotch is young, innovative communications group that brings together expertise in a full scope of communications activities.

Frédéric Bedin is a member of the Croissance Plus network where he held the office of Vice President and then President, from 2006 to 2011. He has been Vice President of the MEDEF’s Competitiveness, Innovation and Appeal commission since 2014, and is also a member of the GPS Service Professionals Organization.  

In 2011, Frédéric Bedin was appointed to the Board of Directors of Catering International Services. He is strongly committed to promoting and supporting entrepreneurship, which he does through the Fondation Entreprendre (he has been a member of the Board since 2016) and by supporting the Apprentis d’Auteuil (NGO) as a member and benefactor.

Interview

What did you study at Paris-Dauphine ?

I graduated from Paris-Dauphine with a Master’s in Management, Finance, and Marketing. I also completed my course work for a DESS in Managing Cultural Institutions, although I did not graduate because the university did not validate my internship (which I did in my own start-up, launched the previous year)!

What is your fondest memory of your time at Paris-Dauphine?

I loved Paris-Dauphine from day 1, which is in stark contrast to my secondary education which I hated. We began the year with a week-long seminar in National Accounting – and I LOVED IT!

Have you stayed in touch with your classmates?

I have kept my Paris-Dauphine friends for over 30 years: some are on my Board od Directors, and I see others regularly.

How did your studies at Paris-Dauphine advance your career?

I use what I learned at Paris-Dauphine every day of my life, including the best way to produce high-performance group projects without loosing time, so that we still have enough time to party!

What image do you have of Paris-Dauphine today?

Paris-Dauphine is certainly more selective than it was 36 years ago… its also more international, like all of the best schools. But the spirit seems to have remained the same: professional and “cool”.

How important do you think building a network is for someone’s career?

My job is to manage public relations for corporations and their top management – so I know the value of a network - it’s also what I sell! The Paris-Dauphine network, friends and alumni, are an asset that we all share and that we must nurture.

What advice would you give to students who want to launch a start-up?

Do it as early as possible because you are not taking much of a risk when you are young and have no family to worry about. Do it with partners, because it’s better not to take things on alone, and if possible, choose partners with different academic backgrounds and skills so that you can take advantage of complementary talents, perspectives, and challenge each other’s ideas.
